Life Insurance · Building Trades & Technical Crews

Life insurance for people who work with their hands.

I ran job sites for twenty years before I wrote my first policy. I know how overtime, per diem, layoff seasons and union benefits really work, and where the gaps usually are. That's what this coverage is built around.

The gap in most trades households

A lot of tradespeople carry life insurance only through the hall or the employer. That coverage is real and worth having. It also tends to have three weaknesses:

  • It's usually a set amount. It's often far less than a mortgage plus the years of income a family would lose.
  • It follows the job, not you. A layoff season, a change of locals, a new contractor or retirement can shrink or end it. Converting it to an individual policy is possible but often expensive.
  • It ignores what you actually earn. Base scale is one number. The overtime, per diem and travel pay your family lives on is another.

An individual policy is yours. It stays put whether you're on the bench, between contractors or retired.

Does a dangerous job make it expensive?

Usually not. Most building trades, including electricians, carpenters, plumbers, pipefitters, operators and laborers, are underwritten mainly on health, tobacco and lifestyle, not job title. A few high-hazard roles and hobbies can draw an extra charge at some carriers. Because each carrier treats them differently, shopping several is worth it.

The tools, in plain English

TypeWhat it doesWhen it fits
Term lifeLowest cost per dollar of coverage for a set period, such as 20 or 30 yearsCovering the mortgage and the years the kids are home
Whole lifeLifetime coverage, level premium, guaranteed cash valuePermanent needs, final expenses, leaving something behind
Indexed / universal lifeLifetime coverage with flexible premiums and cash value tied to rates or an indexPeople who want permanent coverage and are willing to understand and monitor the moving parts

Many policies can include living benefits, which let you access part of the death benefit early after a qualifying critical, chronic or terminal illness diagnosis. For someone whose body is their paycheck, that matters. Details vary by carrier and state.

Your body is the tool that funds every other tool. Insure it like it.

Built for crews on long schedules

Data center buildouts, nuclear outages, shutdown work, travel jobs: I work around your schedule. Phone or video before your shift or after 5, and in person around the South Hills and Mon Valley. Most cases are handled without you taking a day off.

Starting out? Start early.

Coverage is cheapest when you're young and healthy. An apprentice locking in a term policy today pays less for the same coverage than they would at 40. It also secures insurability before a back injury or a diagnosis complicates things.

Serving the South Hills and Mon Valley

I'm based in Bethel Park and work with families and business owners across the South Hills, including Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, South Park, Peters Township, Baldwin, Whitehall, Pleasant Hills and Jefferson Hills, and through the Mon Valley in West Mifflin, McKeesport, Clairton, Elizabeth, Duquesne and Monongahela. Meetings happen at your kitchen table, by phone, or on video, whichever fits your schedule. I'm also licensed in Georgia.

Common questions

Is my union or employer life insurance enough?

It depends on the amount and what you owe. Group coverage is often a fixed benefit or a small multiple of base pay, and it's tied to the job. Compare it to your mortgage balance plus several years of real take-home pay. If there's a gap, that's what an individual policy fills.

Can I keep the policy if I change locals, switch contractors or retire?

Yes. An individual policy belongs to you. It stays in force as long as premiums are paid, regardless of who you work for.

Term or whole life?

Most working families start with term because it buys the most coverage for the money during the years they need it most. Permanent coverage makes sense for specific jobs, like final expenses, leaving money behind or long-term business needs. We size the problem first, then pick the tool.

Do you sell disability insurance?

Ask me. Many life policies can include living-benefit riders for serious illness, and income protection is part of every plan we build. If your situation calls for a standalone disability policy, I'll tell you and point you to the right resource.

Measure Twice. Insure Once.

Everyone has enough money to do it wrong three times. Let's do it once, right.
